FAQs

Transparency is our goal with Emily’s foundation, so please use the Contact page to get in touch with any questions or concerns you have. Thank you!

How will your donation be used?
All general donations are reserved for scholarships and grants. Our goal is 0% administrative fees, and so far we are meeting that – all operating expenses for the charity, as well as expenses for our fundraising events, come directly from family or other private donations earmarked for that purpose.

How many scholarships are we providing?
The average cost of public in-state tuition is nearing $10,000 per school year, and we want each scholarship to make a significant dent. With that said, how much we raise our first year will determine how many scholarships we can disperse – if we can provide one partial scholarship for a deserving student, that is awesome, and if more, even better. Our long-term intent is to grow this into a national scholarship capable of fully paying for several students to achieve their dreams of higher education each and every year.

How many grants are we providing?
To start, we will provide one grant each Fall and one grant each Spring. As we learn what applicants are applying for and refine the process, the number of grants and their size may change to better meet the goals of the charity.

How will we choose recipients?
With great difficulty. Beyond that, we will award scholarships based on academic transcripts, financial need, essay contests, and interviews. Funds will be provided as direct tuition payments to the student’s school of choice.

Where is the charity based?
We are legally incorporated as a 509(a)2 organization in Missouri, where Doug is from and where Emily was laid to rest. We are banking through USAA, a national financial organization for military personnel.

Are donations tax deductible?
The short answer is yes, though we won’t give a hard answer since everyone’s tax situation is different. Simply put, this foundation is a 509(a)2  IRS certified charity, and we will provide written receipts for all donations you make – this receipt is all you need to claim a deduction on your individual tax return.

Our EIN is 81-7005756, and are tax deductible status can be confirmed on the IRS website: https://apps.irs.gov/app/eos/

Are we affiliated with the national Cystic Fibrosis Foundation based in Maryland?
Though we have similar names, Emily’s Light Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is not affiliated with the national CF Foundation. They have a very good website (https://www.cff.org) and are an invaluable resource for people and families living with cystic fibrosis, both by funding research and providing direct healthcare assistance through equipment and medication subsidies. They are a very worthy foundation and will make good use of any donation to that effect.
